Which Sustainability Pillar do Visitors Experience? Triple Bottom Line, Tourist Experience and Satisfaction in the Maldives

Author(s) Mr. Ali Mohamed, Dr. Khursiah Abd Aziz, Dr. Fakhrul Zaman Abdullah

Abstract The study focuses on sustainable tourism in small island developing states (SIDS), using resort destinations in the Maldives as a case study. Small island destinations face unique ecological and socio-economic vulnerabilities, making the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) framework which evaluates environmental, social, and economic sustainability critical to their long-term viability.
While destinations often promote TBL sustainability, it has been unclear how international tourists perceive these individual sustainability dimensions during their stay, and whether these perceptions directly shape the overall guest experience and subsequent tourist satisfaction. To address this, the research integrates TBL principles with Expectation-Disconfirmation Theory (EDT) to evaluate which specific sustainability pillars drive visitor experiences in island resort settings.
