| Abstract | Agriculture still underpins rural livelihoods, employment, food security and regional economic activity in India, so its transformation remains central to long-term development. This review synthesises 40 studies published between 2020 and 2026 on productivity, farm income, crop and livelihood diversification, climate-smart practices, digital and precision tools, marketing, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), financial inclusion, extension and value chains, and it examines coffee as a high-value subsector. The synthesis shows that productivity growth alone cannot explain transformation. Farm income responds to diversification, market access, technology, institutional participation, value addition and resilience to climatic and economic shocks. Digital initiatives improve information and adoption, but the step from knowledge to income is rarely demonstrated, and governance and market linkages determine whether collective action pays. Coffee shows how a largely smallholder crop connects to processing and export markets, and why the distribution of value matters as much as output. The literature remains fragmented, dominated by single-dimension, cross-sectional studies concentrated in a few states. The review calls for integrated, longitudinal research and proposes an Agricultural Transformation–Economic Development framework. |
