Ashram Management as a Foundation of Traditional and Value-Based Management: A Conceptual Study

| Abstract | In the Indian knowledge tradition, Ashrams have not merely been centres of religious or spiritual practice; they have also functioned as important institutions of education, character formation, social service, self-discipline, and community life. The fundamental objective of the Ashram system was to establish harmony among the physical, mental, intellectual, moral, and spiritual development of an individual. While modern management generally emphasizes efficiency, productivity, optimal utilization of resources, and achievement of organizational goals, traditional Indian management gives greater importance to character, duty, ethics, cooperation, self-discipline, service, and social welfare. This conceptual study examines Ashram management as an integrated managerial system and analyses its relevance to contemporary value-based management. The paper focuses on leadership, experiential learning, discipline, resource conservation, service, ethical decision-making, and social responsibility. It is based on a qualitative analysis of secondary literature, classical Indian texts, and contemporary scholarship on Indian management and ethical organizations. The study argues that Ashram management offers a useful value-centred framework for contemporary organizations seeking to strengthen ethical leadership, institutional trust, human development, social responsibility, and sustainability. |
