| Abstract | Snow is a key component of the Himalayan cryosphere and plays a significant role in water resource availability and hydrological processes. This study examines the characteristics of snow cover in the Beas River Basin using MODIS satellite imagery for the period 2019-2021, with particular emphasis on temporal variations in snow cover and its potential influence on the hydrological cycle. Snow Cover Area (SCA) was estimated for the basin using the improved 8-day snow-cover product (Version 6), Terra-Aqua (MOYDGL06), generated from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor. In addition, snow-cover maps were developed from the MODIS observations to analyse the spatial distribution and temporal variability of snow cover across the Beas River Basin. During the study period, SCA in the region varied from 41% (November 2020) to 90% (February 2019). SCA and total precipitation showed declining trends at rates of 2.1 km² and 47.3 cm, respectively, while the average temperature increased from 2019 to 2021 at a rate of 0.14°C. However, during 2019-2021, SCA declined at a higher rate of 19.21 km² and total precipitation decreased at a rate of 28.6 cm. In contrast, the mean temperature increased at a higher rate of 0.40°C. The study indicates that SCA and precipitation declined more rapidly during 2019-2021. The findings suggest that climate change may be an important factor influencing the observed trends in SCA, precipitation, and mean temperature. The observed SCA trend was also found to be consistent with the climatic parameters. The study examines SCA variability from January to December. |
