Algae-Bacteria Symbiosis: A Review

Abstract Algal-bacterial consortia have been found to yield higher biomass, remove nutrients more efficiently, be easier to harvest, and be more resilient to environmental stress and contamination than axenic monocultures. This review brings together the underlying mechanisms of these improvements: gas exchange, exchange of vitamins, nitrogen, phosphorus and iron, phytohormone signaling, quorum sensing and chemotaxis, and antagonistic interactions including algicidal activity.
