| Abstract | This paper explores the transformational aspect of library automation as one of the major educational innovations in higher education institutions (HEIs) across the world. The study uses a convergent mixed-methods design to synthesize a systematic literature review, primary data on 200 administrators, librarians and faculty working in 50 higher education institutions all around the globe, and an in-depth interview and focus group to supplement the primary data collected in the survey. Results indicate that automation is a significant technology that increases the availability of resources and operational efficiency where 90% of the respondents attested that automation improves resource discovery and 78% stated that limited time is spent on manual tasks. The data also suggest that automation and student academic support have a strong positive correlation and 95 percent of the respondents affirmed that it benefited the students. Nevertheless, the research indicates that there are some important moderating variables; there was a sharp contrast in adoption rates (90% in developed countries and 45% in developing countries) due to financial reasons (65% of institutions in low-income environments reported it), and a very important gap in human capital, with only half of the sample respondents agreeing that staff were well trained. The research arrives at the conclusion that although automation is a paradigm shift toward dynamic, anytime, anywhere learning, the opportunities introduced by automation to be an equalizer in the educational sector will rely on the strategic policy-level intervention, long-term investment in human capital, and the implementation of the cost-effective and open-source solutions to the emerging digital divide. |
