Abstract Background: The Weekly Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation (WIFS) programme is an important strategy for preventing and reducing nutritional anaemia among school-going adolescents. Adequate knowledge regarding WIFS is essential for improving its acceptance and utilization among school children.
Aim: The present study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding the Weekly Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation (WIFS) programme among school children studying in a selected government school of Tirupati.
Objectives: The objectives were to assess the level of knowledge regarding WIFS in the pre-test, evaluate the effectiveness of the structured teaching programme through post-test knowledge scores, and determine the association between post-test knowledge and selected socio-demographic variables.
Methods: A quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test research design was adopted. A sample of 100 school children was selected using a simple random sampling technique. Knowledge regarding WIFS was assessed using a structured questionnaire. After the pre-test, a 45-minute structured teaching programme was administered. A post-test was conducted after one week using the same research tool.
Results: In the pre-test, 61% of the school children had poor knowledge and 39% had very poor knowledge. In the post-test, 54% had good knowledge, 32% had average knowledge, 11% had poor knowledge and 3% had excellent knowledge. The overall mean knowledge score increased from 8.08 ± 4.48 (26.08%) in the pre-test to 23.35 ± 4.65 (64.80%) in the post-test. The calculated t value was 26.43, indicating a statistically significant improvement in knowledge following the structured teaching programme. Significant associations were found between post-test knowledge and gender and source of information, whereas no significant association was found with age, socio-economic status, religion, family monthly income and family type.
Conclusion: The findings demonstrate that the structured teaching programme was effective in significantly improving the knowledge of school children regarding the WIFS programme. Improved knowledge may contribute to better awareness and participation in WIFS and support the prevention of anaemia among school children.
