| Abstract | Early literacy is a foundational component of pupils’ academic development. This study examined the role of parental and guardian involvement in the early literacy development and reading performance of young learners. Specifically, it determined the respondents’ profile, described the pupils’ reading performance, assessed the extent of parental and guardian involvement, identified barriers to home-based literacy support, and gathered suggestions for improving home reading practices. A descriptive-correlational research design was employed. Data were collected from parents and guardians of Kindergarten to Grade 3 pupils using a researcher-developed questionnaire, an early literacy assessment tool, and a semi-structured interview guide. The questionnaire was validated by education experts and pilot-tested, obtaining a Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient of 0.87. The respondents were predominantly female, married, college-educated parents or guardians. Most reported reading with their children daily or several times a week. The findings indicate that home-based reading activities, assistance with reading assignments, and communication between parents and teachers are important forms of literacy support. However, some families experienced barriers related to time, access to materials, and limited knowledge of reading instruction. The study recommends an enhanced home-based reading program consisting of parent orientation, accessible reading materials, guided home-reading activities, and regular school-home communication. |
