The Decline of Indian Smartphone Brands in a Competitive Market

| Abstract | The Indian smartphone industry has experienced significant growth in manufacturing capacity, alongside major changes in market competition and brand performance. Indian smartphone brands, including Micromax, Intex, Karbonn, Spice, Celkon and Videocon, initially gained recognition through affordable pricing and extensive distribution. However, many subsequently lost market share or discontinued their smartphone operations. This study examines the major factors responsible for the decline of Indian smartphone brands, the challenges faced by surviving companies and the entry of new domestic competitors. A qualitative, descriptive and analytical approach was adopted using secondary data from research papers, industry reports, market-share estimates, company announcements and publicly available financial information. The findings indicate that intense competition from Chinese manufacturers, delayed technological adaptation, limited product differentiation, financial constraints and weaknesses in research and development contributed to the decline of several domestic brands. Meanwhile, Lava and Karbonn continue to represent efforts to maintain a market presence, while Micromax has attempted to revive its smartphone business. The entry of Ai+, Wobble, boltt and Mivi reflects renewed interest in the Indian smartphone market. The study concludes that sustainable growth requires stronger domestic technological capabilities, efficient manufacturing, competitive products, reliable software support, effective distribution and dependable after-sales services. |
