| Abstract | Digital technology has transformed the relationship between citizens, political institutions, political parties, governments, and the media. The growth of social media, online news platforms, digital campaigning, e-governance, and other forms of internet-based communication has created new possibilities for political participation and democratic engagement. This transformation is often described through the concept of digital democracy, in which digital technologies are used to facilitate political communication, participation, information sharing, accountability, and interaction between citizens and institutions. At the same time, digital democracy presents significant challenges. Misinformation and disinformation can spread rapidly, political communication can become increasingly polarized, citizens may be exposed to algorithmically selected information, and unequal access to digital technologies can reproduce existing social inequalities. In India, institutions such as the Election Commission of India have increasingly used digital platforms for voter education and communication, while also developing mechanisms to address problems associated with online election campaigning and misinformation. This article examines the relationship between digital democracy and political communication, focusing on its opportunities, challenges, and implications for democratic governance. |
