Behind the White Coat: Evaluating Workplace Stressors, Mental Health Outcomes, and Institutional Interventions Among Indian Resident Doctors

Author(s) Dr. Rachita Dinesh Kurmi
Country India
Abstract Postgraduate medical residency in India is an intensive clinical training phase marked by high patient volumes, long shifts, and demanding academic expectations. Although resident doctors form the core operational workforce of tertiary healthcare delivery, chronic exposure to severe occupational strain predisposes them to elevated psychological distress, psychiatric morbidity, and professional burnout.
Objectives: This literature review synthesises evidence across 50 empirical and review studies (spanning 2010–2026) to map the prevalence, key clinical and socio-demographic determinants, psychometric assessment tools, and coping interventions associated with occupational stress and burnout among medical residents in India.
Keywords Resident Doctors, Occupational Stress, Burnout Syndrome, Depression, Medical Residency, India, Trainee Well-Being.
