Abstract Fragility in modern relationships today may be not a norm but is still widespread and its growth is seen across the World. Earlier marriage used to be an economic arrangement when the workforce primarily comprised of males. The man was also deemed as a bread winner and women were stay at home wives and mothers. However, all this changed after the industrial revolution and two World Wars. Today with more and more women in the workforce, pay parity, gender equality and the social dynamics in a family system has changed. Today relationships are not just between opposite genders, co-habitation, live-in relationships, no fault divorce, female friendly laws, equality between genders, all such aspects have been introduced. Previous research cited infidelity as the main cause of divorce. However, this may not be the only factor. Divorce today from a global perspective may have a lot of other factors involved since women are catching up or sometimes even exceeding in aspects that were earlier considered a man’s domain. The current research thus used literature review from a psychological standpoint to understand the contributing factors affecting modern relationships, these can range from a conventional marriage, live-in relationships or any kind of co-habiting arrangement. The methodology used quantitative in nature where Google forms were used. The findings are enlightening and point out to various other factors that are responsible for this institution to break. Earlier research involved aspects such as domestic abuse and infidelity which may still have a significant contribution, the new research however lays emphasis on other aspects as well such as unmatched expectations etc. There is significantly less patience and breaking up is less of a taboo when modern relationships are concerned.
