one nation one election

Abstract The ‘One Nation, One Election’ (ONOE) proposal aims to synchronise elections to the Lok Sabha and the State Legislative Assemblies so that they are generally held together in a single electoral cycle. Recurrent elections involve considerable expenditure, the repeated deployment of public staff and security forces, and periods when the Model Code of Conduct may affect government announcements and administrative priorities. The proposal has returned to national discussion because its supporters argue that synchronisation could reduce these costs and give governments more time to govern. Critics, however, raise constitutional and democratic concerns about federalism, the autonomy of State administrations, the premature dissolution of legislatures, voter preferences, unequal campaigning strength, and the risk of national issues overshadowing local ones.
