Fashion Forecasting in India: Bridging Cultural Heritage, Consumer Behavior and Contemporary Fashion Markets

Author(s) Dr. Sneha Bhatnagar
Country India
Abstract Fashion forecasting is a predictive and interpretive process that examines historical data, emergent cultural shifts, consumer behavior, and market developments to predict the future of the fashion industry. Age, income, geography, and lifestyle are not the only factors that influence fashion consumption in modern India; cultural identity, emotional associations, religious beliefs, regional traditions, climatic conditions, and occasion-specific dressing practices also contribute to this phenomenon. The country's sartorial customs, craft practices, and diverse textile traditions present substantial opportunities for the development of culturally responsive fashion forecasting methods. This paper investigates the potential of fashion forecasting to facilitate a meaningful dialogue between the contemporary fashion industry requirements and Indian cultural heritage, and it examines fashion as a form of material culture. The identification of emerging trends and their translation into commercially viable products are frequently the primary focus of existing forecasting methods. Nevertheless, a more nuanced framework that acknowledges regional diversity, consumer values, artisan knowledge, and evolving social identities is necessary for the interpretation of global trends within India's heterogeneous cultural context. This paper suggests a framework that is India-centric and incorporates cultural observation, trend interpretation, consumer validation, design translation, and market evaluation, drawing on conceptual literature on fashion forecasting, material culture, consumer behavior, and heritage textiles. It contends that Indian fashion forecasting should not be limited to predicting visual trends; rather, it should be a strategic process that curates design directions that are both commercially pertinent and culturally significant. The potential of traditional textiles, regional crafts, and contemporary consumer aspirations to inform distinctive Indian fashion narratives is underscored by the proposed framework. The study provides a conceptual framework for additional empirical research on culturally grounded fashion forecasting and its implications for the representation of Indian heritage in contemporary fashion, industry development, and design practice.
