| Abstract | The Bhagavad Gītā offers profound philosophical and psychological insights into the nature of the human mind and the means of attaining mental stability. Among its essential teachings, Abhyāsa (consistent practice) and Vairāgya (detachment) occupy a central position in the discipline of mind control. This study examines the significance of these two complementary principles in mastering the restless mind, with particular reference to the teachings of the Bhagavad Gītā and the Pātañjala Yoga Sūtras. It analyses how Abhyāsa, through sustained effort, repetition, meditation, and self-discipline, cultivates concentration and mental steadiness, while Vairāgya helps overcome attachment, excessive desires, and anxiety regarding the fruits of action. The study also explores their practical applications in emotional regulation, self-control, ethical conduct, and the development of psychological resilience. Special attention is given to the Bhagavad Gītā 6.35, which identifies practice and detachment as the principal means of restraining the mind, and to the doctrine of Niṣkāma Karma, which promotes dedicated action without attachment to results. By examining the interdependent nature of Abhyāsa and Vairāgya, this research demonstrates that sustained practice and inner detachment together provide a coherent framework for mental discipline and spiritual development. It further highlights the contemporary relevance of these principles in addressing distraction, emotional instability, and stress. The study concludes that the teachings of the Bhagavad Gītā offer a practical and enduring approach to self-mastery, inner equilibrium, and self-realization. |
