Role of Career Development Opportunities in Enhancing Job Satisfaction: Evidence from Educational Institutions

| Abstract | Job satisfaction influences whether teachers and academics remain in their roles, stay committed, and perform effectively in the classroom. This paper synthesizes research on the link between career development opportunities and job satisfaction within educational institutions. It has three aims: to pinpoint the key elements of career development programs, to explore how opportunities for professional advancement relate to job satisfaction, and to assess the structural obstacles that hinder career advancement in academia. The paper draws on a narrative review of peer-reviewed research, international survey findings, and policy materials. It outlines five elements of career development: organized professional development, mentoring and peer networks, clear advancement routes, broadened roles, and supportive resources. Opportunities for growth are repeatedly linked to greater satisfaction, but how strong this link varies with perceived relevance, autonomy, and the broader professional context. High workloads, precarious employment, unclear or research-biased promotion standards, poor leadership, limited resources, and unequal access reduce the positive impact. The paper discusses implications for institutional leadership and highlights the need for empirical research in regional Indian institutions. |
