| Abstract | Reading comprehension is essential for academic achievement and everyday life; however, many learners, particularly young students, experience difficulties understanding written texts. This study examined the reading comprehension difficulties and reading levels of 250 Grade 7 students from five public secondary schools in West 2 District, Cagayan de Oro City, during School Year 2024–2025. Specifically, it assessed difficulties in vocabulary, spelling, identifying the main idea, concentration, and reading motivation, as well as their relationship with students’ reading levels. Using a descriptive-correlational research design and stratified sampling, data were gathered through a validated questionnaire and selected passages from the PHIL-IRI assessment tool. Mean, standard deviation, and Pearson correlation were utilized for data analysis. Findings revealed that concentration was the most challenging aspect of reading, while identifying the main idea had the lowest difficulty. Most students demonstrated independent reading levels across all passages, indicating their ability to comprehend texts with minimal assistance. Furthermore, a significant relationship was established between reading difficulties and reading levels, particularly in concentration. The study concluded that improving students’ concentration and comprehension skills is essential. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to implement appropriate reading interventions and strategies that strengthen concentration and address the needs of learners experiencing frustration-level reading difficulties. |
