| Abstract | Large-format home-furnishing retailers are now moving into dense city centres withmuch smaller stores, which raises the question of whether their in-store design stillworks at a reduced scale. This paper examines a global home-furnishing retailer’s firstcity-format store in India, a three-level, 80,000 sq ft outlet in Worli, Mumbai, throughfour lenses: store design, space management, visual merchandising and storeatmosphere. Data come from repeated store visits and a questionnaire survey of 122respondents (1 to 22 October 2026). Overall satisfaction was high (73.0% satisfied;mean 4.04 out of 5), with room-set displays and colour and lighting rated strongest, while value for price (3.74) and promotions and loyalty-programme influence (3.70)rated lowest. The results suggest that, in a city store, visual presentation earns morecustomer approval than pricing and promotion do. |
