Women’s Desire for Perfection and Self-Fulfilment in the Plays of Girish Karnad

Author(s) Renu Yadav
Country India
Abstract Karnad’s women characters have their own potentials. They present as subaltern but, in this situation, also they find their own way to fulfil their desire. In the words of P. D. Nimsarkar, “While performing their social roles in the family and society, Karnad’s women take care of their desires and to achieve them find their own way”. Padmini in Hayavadana has a desire to get a perfect man mentally as well as physically. Padmini’s husband, Devadatta has a perfect mind and his friend, Kapila has a perfect body. When she gets the occasion at goddess Kali’s temple to place the head of these two people with their bodies, she mixes the head and completes her desire to get a complete man with sharp mind and strong body in the form of Devadatta’s head and Kapila’s body. Even goddess Kali is aware about her intention and says to her satirically, “My dear daughter, there should be a limit even to honesty”.
