| Abstract | Murshidabad is situated on the banks of the Bhagirathi River in West Bengal and is a major historical and cultural area in eastern India. In the 18th century, it became the capital of the Bengal Subah and was a major centre of political, commercial and architectural activity. This paper examines the possible connection between ancient earthquakes and the structural deterioration observed in several Nawabi heritage buildings in and around Kella Nizamat, focusing on the earthquakes of 1764 and 1897. The study uses a range of sources including historical accounts, field observations, GPS-based spatial data, oral accounts and secondary geological and seismological data. Field observations reveal that many heritage structures (palaces, mosques, tombs and gateways) are in various states of decay. Structural damage results from a combination of seismic activity, riverbank erosion, weathering, material decay, neglect, and human interference. The study proposes an integrated approach that combines heritage tourism and geotourism to link earthquakes, structural collapse, the Bengal Basin, heritage tourism, geotourism and geoconservation sustainably for heritage management. |
