A Comparative Study Of Gothic Elements In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey

Author(s) Ms. Swati Kaushik
Country India
Abstract This comparative analysis investigates the Gothic aspects of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818) and Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey (1817). Whereas Frankenstein is commonly considered to be a paradigmatic Gothic novel, Northanger Abbey tends to be viewed as a satire of the genre. Yet, in this thesis, it is claimed that both novels are working through Gothic tropes in sophisticated and multifaceted ways, corresponding to the social fears and cultural anxieties of late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century society.
