Abstract | The prospects in the Indian higher education system are covered in this paper. Following 34 years ago, in order to boost the expansion of the Indian education sector, Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi and the ruling government decided to rebuild the teaching, learning, and evaluation system in schools and colleges. To this end, they introduced the Comprehensive National Education Policy 2020, a 66-page 21st-century policy document. Under the administration of then-prime minister Smt. Indira Gandhi, the first NEP was drafted in 1968. The second NEP was drafted in 1986 under the administration of then-prime minister Sh. Rajiv Gandhi. Prior educational policies have mostly addressed accessibility and equitable concerns in their implementation. This policy correctly addresses the unfinished agenda of the National Policy on Education 1986, as amended in 1992. The paper evaluates the effectiveness of significant reforms, focusing on the opportunities and constraints of NEP 2020, including the adoption of a competency-based curriculum, the incorporation of vocational training, and multilingual education. The findings demonstrate significant advancements in fostering experiential learning and digital literacy, but problems with resource allocation, teacher preparation, and infrastructure development persist, particularly in rural areas. The long-term viability of the NEP depends on continued stakeholder participation and policy flexibility. The results offer useful information for educators and policymakers who are trying to align educational practices with the NEP's goal for an equitable and future-ready educational system. |
