Optimization of Process Parameters in Metal Additive Manufacturing for Enhanced Mechanical Properties and Surface Finish

Abstract | Metal Additive Manufacturing (MAM) has emerged as a transformative technology in modern manufacturing, enabling the fabrication of complex geometries with minimal waste. However, the mechanical properties and surface finish of printed components are highly sensitive to process parameters such as laser power, scan speed, layer thickness, and hatch spacing. This paper investigates the optimization of these parameters in Selective Laser Melting (SLM) to improve tensile strength, hardness, and surface quality. By employing a combination of Design of Experiments (DOE) and statistical modeling techniques like Response Surface Methodology (RSM), the study identifies optimal parameter settings. The results demonstrate significant improvements in part quality, supporting the broader industrial adoption of MAM. |
