Colonial Experience in Nadine Gordimer’s My Son’s Story

Author(s) Dr. Meghna Sharma
Country India
Abstract My Son’s Story (1990), Nadine Gordimer’s well-received novel, won her a Nobel Prize in Literature. The novel explores the intersections of politics, race, and personal relationships amid colonial experiences. The novel reflects the moral complexities faced by those involved in the anti-apartheid struggle. The story is narrated by Will, a coloured (mixed race) teenager in South Africa. His father, known as Sonny, is a school teacher who becomes involved in the anti-apartheid struggle. Will accidentally discovers his father is having an affair with Hannah, a white political activist. This affair brings sorrow to the family and his wife and daughter grow bitter and critical towards him. The novel depicts not only the personal tension of Sonny, but also his spiritual and public duty towards his race. The novel portrays the colonial experience, not through the colonisers, but through racial divisions, fractured identity, and cultural alienation.
Keywords Apartheid, Colonial, Morality, Race, Culture, Alienation etc.
