Empowering Stree Shakti: Financial Inclusion and The Self Help Groups Model in Andhra Pradesh

Author(s) Dr. Mukkoti Venkata Seshaiah

Abstract The study posits that financial inclusion, through mechanisms like formal banking, credit, and insurance, serves as a fundamental enabler of not only economic but also social and psychological empowerment. We critically analyse the Indian government's policy landscape, from the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) to the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), and evaluate their effectiveness in bridging the gender gap in financial access. The core of this paper delves into the unique and highly successful model of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in Andhra Pradesh. We examine how these grassroots collectives, through their linkage with the formal banking system, have provided a powerful last-mile delivery mechanism for financial services, leading to increased savings, entrepreneurial activity, and enhanced decision-making power for women.
