Voices of Resistance in Malabar: Understanding Mappila Literature through Pareekutty Musliyar

| Abstract | In this article i discuss the role of literature especially Muhimmath ul Mumineeneen as a mode of resistance. Literature can influence the society in a deep rooted manner and attract people to the views of the writer and to the battle field of liberation. Moreover it is the experiences and miseries of the writer suffered from the colonizer. Burney Shehla writes, “the term resistance literature concerns a form of cultural production that recognizes the sufferings and ordeals of the colonized, a form that allies itself with the oppressed and is aware of the colonizer’s policies – policies that are based on ignoring the natives, silencing them, and discrediting their right to live in their homeland. Resistance literature has no geographical boundaries, and no force can prevent it from travelling across borders and penetrating people’s hearts and minds. One needs to remember here that resistance literature expresses ideas or words only while it is still under production; the moment the word leaves the pen or the desk of the writer, it turns into a dynamic force for change” |
