Influence of Folk Culture on Modern Assamese Language: An Analytical Study

| Abstract | Assamese folk culture, an essential component of the socio-cultural heritage of Assam, has historically played a vital role in shaping the linguistic, literary, and aesthetic dimensions of the Assamese language. Folk culture—expressed through oral traditions, songs, dances, festivals, rituals, myths, folklore, and collective memories—has continuously influenced the development of vocabulary, idioms, syntax, metaphors, and symbolic representations in Assamese. In the modern era, despite the rapid changes brought by globalization, technology, and urbanization, folk culture persists as a dynamic force that enriches modern Assamese language and literature. This seminar paper analyses the historical interrelationship between folk culture and the Assamese language, evaluates how folk traditions operate as linguistic reservoirs, and examines their influence on contemporary linguistic practices. Using qualitative methods, textual analysis, and cultural–linguistic frameworks, the study identifies key areas—lexical borrowing, semantic evolution, stylistic patterns, artistic expressions, and modern media representations—where folk culture contributes significantly. The paper further discusses the challenges posed by commercialization, linguistic homogenization, and generational gaps, and proposes strategies for sustaining the folk-language connect in contemporary times. Through an analytical lens, this paper concludes that folk culture is not merely a cultural ornament but an active and irreplaceable foundation of Assamese linguistic identity. |
