An Analysis Of The Different Methods Of Pre-Fabricating Design

Author(s) Mr John Kalayil Chandy
Country India
Abstract Pre-fabricated design refers to the off-site manufacturing of building components or complete structures that are later transported and assembled at the construction site. This construction approach has gained importance due to its ability to improve quality control, reduce construction time, lower costs, and minimise material waste. This study analyses and evaluates the different approaches to pre-fabricated design used in the construction industry. A comprehensive literature review is conducted to examine major pre-fabrication methods, including modular construction, panelised construction, volumetric construction, and pre-fabricated components. These methods are compared based on cost, time efficiency, and construction quality, highlighting their advantages and limitations. The study also discusses challenges such as design complexity, transportation issues, and coordination of multiple components. Findings indicate that pre-fabrication has significantly contributed to improved productivity, sustainability, and economic efficiency within the UK construction sector. The research further identifies future research opportunities, including enhanced design integration and the adoption of advanced technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) to improve pre-fabrication effectiveness.
