Voices of Democracy: The Role Of Social Movements In Policymaking in Contemporary India

Author(s) Ms. Akshaya Putta
Country India
Abstract Social movements play a crucial role in strengthening democratic participation by influencing public discourse and policymaking. This study examines how social movements shape policy outcomes in contemporary India, with a focus on the Farmers’ Protest (2020–2021) and recent women’s movements such as the #MeToo India movement. Using a mixed-methods approach that combines literature review, case study analysis, and a survey of 32 respondents, the research explores the strategies employed by movements to influence state decisions. The findings indicate that street protests and collective mobilisation remain the most effective mechanisms for policy influence, while digital activism primarily enhances visibility and awareness. The study concludes that hybrid activism, integrating physical mobilisation with digital engagement, is central to achieving meaningful policy change in democratic contexts like India.
