Resilience Beyond Labels: A Humanistic Case Study of an Individual with ADHD and Dyslexia in Higher Education

| Abstract | Neurological conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and dyslexia are commonly viewed through deficit-oriented educational frameworks, a tendency that becomes more pronounced in the case of girls, whose needs are often under-identified and misunderstood. Social stigma, inadequate awareness, and gendered expectations further hinder acceptance and the development of responsive support systems. When ADHD and dyslexia coexist, these challenges intensify, influencing academic engagement, emotional wellbeing, and social participation, and increasing vulnerability to marginalization within educational and societal contexts. Despite these challenges, individuals with ADHD and dyslexia often demonstrate remarkable resilience, adaptive coping strategies, and strong psychosocial capacities. Neurological diversity does not restrict intellectual potential, creativity, or leadership abilities, rather, it calls for environments that recognize and nurture individual strengths. Emphasizing empathetic inclusion, gender-sensitive understanding, and strength-based educational practices can transform perceptions of ADHD and dyslexia, fostering equity, empowerment, and meaningful participation across learning and professional spaces. |
