| Abstract | In recent decades, sociological interest in tribal communities has increased due to growing awareness of their marginal position in Indian society. Tribal groups constitute one of the most vulnerable sections of the population despite constitutional safeguards and welfare measures. The present study focuses on the Meda tribe of Karnataka, a lesser-known tribal community traditionally engaged in bamboo-based occupations. The study examines their socio-economic condition, educational status, occupational changes, and access to welfare schemes. Using primary data collected from 50 respondents in Chitradurga district, the research highlights the challenges faced by the Meda tribe in the context of modernization and economic change. The findings reveal declining traditional occupations, low educational attainment, weak political participation, and limited utilization of government welfare measures. The study emphasizes the need for inclusive and culturally sensitive development strategies for the Meda community. |
