| Abstract | Abstract Despite constitutional guarantees and educational reforms promoting gender equality, discrimination against girls continues to persist within school classrooms. This paper examines gender-based discrimination experienced by adolescent girls in secondary schools of Srinagar and Budgam districts of Jammu and Kashmir. The study is based on primary data collected through classroom-based surveys, comparing the experiences of girls with those of boys. The focus is on school environment, teacher behaviour, peer interactions, and girls’ participation and voice in classrooms. The findings indicate that adolescent girls face subtle yet consistent forms of bias that influence their academic engagement, self-confidence, and classroom participation. The paper argues that everyday classroom practices play a crucial role in reproducing gender inequality and highlights the need for gender-sensitive teaching practices and inclusive school environments. |
