Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana: A Pathway to Financial Inclusion for Girls

| Abstract | This paper attempts to study the progress and role of Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana scheme in achieving financial inclusion for girls in India. The primary objective of this saving scheme aimed at ensuring the gender equality and welfare of the girls, but broadly the scheme seeks to promote financial security for girls, focusing on their education and marriage. The study shows the 4.24 crore SSY accounts opened and 2.99 lakh crore outstanding deposits made under Sukanya Samruddi Yojana during 2014-15 to 2024-25. This will contributed the success of financial inclusion account opening drive and increasing financial literacy among people in the country. The post office in rural area is playing a major role in the success of this scheme. The share of post offices in opening SSY accounts is 92.73 percent in 2015-16 and it is decreased to 83.23 in 2024-25. The study found that although the banks share in SSY account holding is 16.77 percent in 2024-25, banks share in outstanding deposits is drastically increased to 47.71 percent. |
