Vision-Based Real-Time Sign Language Translator Using MediaPipe and OpenCV on Raspberry PI

Abstract This paper presents a vision-based real-time sign language translator using MediaPipe and OpenCV on Raspberry Pi for assistive communication. The system recognizes 25 predefined static hand gestures using hand landmark detection and rule-based finger-state analysis. The recognized message is displayed on a 16×2 LCD and converted into speech using an offline text-to-speech engine. Experimental results achieved approximately 80% accuracy with a response time of 3–5 seconds, demonstrating a low-cost, fully offline, and practical embedded solution.
