Electoral Realignment in Andhra Pradesh After 2014

| Abstract | The bifurcation of united Andhra Pradesh in 2014, which led to the creation of Telangana, produced a major shock to the political system of the successor state and catalyzed a profound electoral realignment that unfolded across the 2014, 2019, and 2024 electoral cycles. This paper analyzes the patterns, causes, and consequences of that realignment—mapping shifts in party vote shares and seats, changes in party strategies and organization, and the social and institutional drivers that reshaped regional politics. Drawing on official election results, party-level vote-share data, and recent scholarly and policy analyses, the study argues that the realignment resulted from an interplay of structural factors introduced by bifurcation (territorial reconfiguration and altered caste geography), leadership dynamics (personalization and welfare populism), and strategic factors (alliances and national party positioning). Quantitative data reveal that the YSR Congress Party’s (YSRCP) vote share rose from 44.6% in 2014 to 49.9% in 2019 before declining to 40.1% in 2024, while the Telugu Desam Party’s (TDP) share moved inversely over the same period. These shifts illustrate how bifurcation redefined the contours of political competition and voter behavior, offering broader insights into how territorial shocks reshape regional party systems and democratic accountability in India. |
