Entrepreneurial Characteristics and Business Performance among Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)

Abstract This study determined the level of entrepreneurial characteristics and business performance among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Koronadal City, South Cotabato; as well as their relationship and predictive value, moderated by age, sex, and educational background. This study is quantitative research, descriptive and correlational in design. A census technique was applied. A validated self-made questionnaire was given to business owners of SMEs who are operating for at least five years, participated the study. Pearson Correlation Coefficient, Multiple Regression Analysis, and Hayes Process Macro Moderation Analysis was used to analyze the data. As a result, the study showed business owner in Koronadal City are mostly female who are middle age adult individual; and most of them are with educational background related to business course such as accounting, marketing, finance, human resource and economics. The result also found out that business owners in Koronadal City possessed a slightly high level of entrepreneurial characteristics in terms of achievement, planning, and power traits; and the SMEs in the local showed a very high level of business performance in terms of internal operation, customer satisfaction, financial management, and motivation. The study also showed that there is a strong positive significant relationship between entrepreneurial characteristics and business performance; however, entrepreneurial characteristics does not significantly predict the level of business performance. The study also tested the moderation effect of age, sex, and educational background, as a result, only age and educational background moderate the relationship between entrepreneurial characteristics and business performance. Based on the findings of the study, a model was proposed to understand the components of business success, this model is called Hierarchy of Needs-Based Approach to Business Outcome (NBA Model). The model guides entrepreneur to ensure longer sustainable business operation.
