A Study of the Economic and Social Dynamics of the Pvtg Bonda in Odisha

Author(s) Dr. Sabitri Majhi
Country India
Abstract According to the 2011 Census, tribal groups represent 8.6% of India's population, amounting to over 10.43 million people, with 705 scheduled tribes predominantly located in rural areas, covering 15% of the total geographical area. Within these, approximately 75 tribes are classified as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG), which are facing significant economic and social challenges, particularly in education and technical development. Odisha has the highest concentration of PVTGs, totaling 13. Each PVTG possesses unique social structures, cultures, and values. Additionally, the concept of marriage varies among societies; traditionally defined as a union between a man and a woman, this perspective is criticized by anthropologists for being overly narrow. The Oxford English Dictionary broadens this definition to encompass the legally recognized unions that highlight human relational aspects.
