Abstract Growing up in an athletic family often shapes career choices through early exposure to sport, strong role modelling, and shared family values. During adolescence, individuals begin forming career aspirations that are influenced by family environment, cultural expectations, mentorship, and personal interests, particularly in societies such as the United Arab Emirates where family legacy plays a central role. This study examines how growing up in an athletic family influences career choices, focusing on the Binashour handball family in the UAE. A qualitative case study approach was used, involving semi-structured interviews with five members of the Binashour family, all former national handball players who continue to work in sports-related roles. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns related to early sport exposure, observational learning, emotional and motivational influence, and intergenerational career continuity. Findings suggest that family influence strongly shapes career decisions through modelling, support, and shared identity, often leading to long-term involvement in sport-related professions. Overall, athletic families play a key role in shaping both career trajectories and identity formation.
