Abstract Examination anxiety is a widespread phenomenon among adolescent students, yet limited empirical research exists on this issue in the north-eastern states of India. This study investigated the level of examination anxiety and its relationship with academic performance among higher secondary students in Bishnupur District, Manipur. A sample of 700 students was selected from 8 higher secondary schools (4 government and 4 private) using a two-stage stratified proportionate random sampling method. Examination anxiety was measured using the standardized Examination Anxiety Scale (EAS) by Abbasi and Ghosh (2020), while academic performance was assessed through students' percentage marks in the Class XI board examination conducted by COHSEM in 2025. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's product-moment correlation. Results indicated that the majority of students (66%) experienced an average level of examination anxiety, while 16% exhibited high anxiety and 18% demonstrated low anxiety. A statistically significant strong negative correlation was found between examination anxiety and academic performance (r = –.68, p < .001), indicating that higher anxiety levels were associated with lower academic achievement. These findings highlight the need for school-based mental health interventions, anxiety screening programs, and teacher training initiatives to support test-anxious students in Bishnupur District.
