Political Participation of Northeast Indian Women: Identity, Marginalisation, and Representation.

Author(s) Miss Tarak Juniam
Country India
Abstract A lot of women in Northeast India don’t really participate in formal politics, which showcases the paradox of participation in Indian democracy. Even though women from the region have active roles in many things, including, but not limited to, ethnic movements, peace-building, grassroots activism, and community involvement, we can’t excuse the absence of political power and decisions from the active social engagement. This research tries to understand the participation of women in the political domain of the Northeastern states of India. What interests the researcher the most are the impacts of ethnic and tribal identities, the presence of patriarchal and traditional notions, and the presence of a militarized situation on women’s political participation. In this regard, it becomes important to understand women’s political participation in protest movements which include the Meira Paibi protests and protests against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). It includes many other community based women-led organizations that have been active in the resistance and peace-building efforts in the region. Furthermore, this research is concerned about women’s absence in the realm of electoral politics and in the traditional decision-making structures and leadership roles.
Keywords Northeast India, women's political engagement, identity, marginalization, representation, gender, democracy, empowerment.
