| Abstract | Medical education is not only concerned with academic excellence and professional competency but also with the creation of a safe, respectful, inclusive, and ethically responsible educational environment. In recent years, increasing awareness regarding gender equality, women’s safety, workplace dignity, and prevention of harassment has highlighted the critical importance of Women Grievance Redressal Committees (WGRCs) in medical institutions. These committees play a pivotal role in safeguarding the rights, dignity, and emotional well-being of female students, faculty members, healthcare workers, and administrative staff within educational and healthcare settings. Medical colleges and teaching hospitals represent highly demanding professional environments where students and healthcare professionals work under significant academic, emotional, and clinical pressure. In such settings, women may occasionally encounter discrimination, harassment, gender bias, mental stress, or inappropriate behavior that can adversely affect their education, professional development, confidence, and psychological well-being. Women Grievance Redressal Committees provide an organized institutional mechanism for addressing such concerns confidentially, fairly, sensitively, and effectively. The committee serves multiple functions including prevention of harassment, promotion of gender sensitization, counseling, awareness generation, emotional support, and implementation of institutional policies related to women’s welfare and safety. Effective grievance redressal mechanisms contribute significantly to maintaining professionalism, discipline, equality, mental well-being, and institutional harmony. Despite their immense importance, Women Grievance Redressal Committees face several challenges including underreporting of complaints, fear of social stigma, lack of awareness, emotional distress among complainants, administrative delays, and inadequate sensitization. Therefore, medical institutions must strengthen these committees through transparent policies, legal awareness, confidentiality, counseling services, and proactive gender-sensitization programs. The present article discusses the importance, objectives, functions, advantages, challenges, and future perspectives of Women Grievance Redressal Committees in medical education and emphasizes their vital role in promoting safe, equitable, and respectful educational environments. |
