| Abstract | The discovery of the Glymphatic System has revolutionised our understanding of the waste clearance in the central nervous system (CNS) by revealing a macro-microscopic perivascular pathway for metabolic detoxification. This physiological discovery brings to mind the age-old tenets of classical Ayurvedic medicine, which refers to the Majjavaha Srotas as the principal conduit for the nourishment and sustenance of the Majja Dhatu (bone marrow and nerve tissue). This review establishes a definitive functional convergence of these two paradigms and posits the Majjavaha Srotas to be analogous to the CNS perivascular waste clearance pathway. The integration is based on the association of Tarpaka Kapha a subtype of Kapha responsible for nourishing the senses with Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF). In both systems these fluids are important for cushioning and for transporting nutrients, but their stagnation is associated with cognitive impairment. The paper also describes the importance of Nidra (sleep) as a physiological connection. Just as modern science identifies sleep as the key state for glymphatic activation and amyloid-beta removal, Ayurveda identifies quality sleep as the critical time for Dhatu replenishment and Srotas cleansing. This research presents a unique integrative approach for the management of neurodegenerative illnesses linking the involvement of Tarpaka Kapha with Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) and Nidra (sleep) with glymphatic activation. |
