| Abstract | The Kalyana Chalukyas, who ruled the Deccan from 973 to 1189 CE, established a sophisticated economic system in Andhradesa that combined agrarian taxation, commercial regulation, monetised exchange, and institutional patronage. This research paper examines the economic formations and fiscal administration that prevailed during their rule in the Andhra region. Drawing primarily upon epigraphical evidence—including stone inscriptions, copper plate charters, and land grant records—as well as contemporary literary sources such as the Manasollasa, this study analyses land revenue systems, taxation structures, trade networks, merchant guilds, coinage, irrigation management, and temple-based economic institutions. The paper argues that the Kalyana Chalukya period witnessed significant economic innovations, including a differentiated land classification system, a complex multi-tiered taxation regime, the institutionalisation of merchant guilds as fiscal intermediaries, and the development of mints at Lokkigundi and Sudi that produced a stable gold and silver coinage. The study also examines the feudal economic relations between the imperial centre and its feudatories, the role of temples as economic enterprises, and the practice of granting revenue assignments as remuneration for military and administrative service. The article concludes that the economic structures established during this period laid the foundation for the subsequent commercial prosperity of the Kakatiya and Vijayanagara periods. |
