A Study to Assess Effectiveness of Demonstration on Picc Dressing and Management in Terms of Knowledge and Practice among 3rd Year B.sc. Students in Selected Nursing Collegeat Vadodara City

Abstract ABSTRACT:
Background of the Study: Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) dressing and management are essential nursing procedures that require adequate knowledge and practical skills to prevent complications and ensure patient safety. Nursing students must be competent in PICC care to provide quality patient care. Demonstration is an effective teaching method for improving knowledge and practice related to clinical procedures.
Objectives:
1. To assess the knowledge and practice regarding PICC dressing and management among 3rd-year B.Sc. Nursing students.
2. To plan and administer a demonstration on PICC dressing and management and evaluate its effectiveness in terms of knowledge and practice among 3rd-year B.Sc. Nursing students.
3. To determine the association between pre-test and post-test knowledge scores with selected demographic variables.
Methods: An evaluative research approach with a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design was adopted. A total of 60 third-year B.Sc. Nursing students were selected using non-probability purposive sampling. Data were collected using a structured knowledge questionnaire. Following the pre-test, a demonstration on PICC dressing and management was administered. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics including frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, chi-square test, and paired t-test.
Results: In the pre-test, 16 (26.66%) students had inadequate knowledge and 44 (73.33%) had moderate knowledge. In the post-test, 1 (1.66%) student had inadequate knowledge, 15 (25.00%) had moderate knowledge, and 44 (73.33%) had adequate knowledge. The mean pre-test score was 11.60, which increased to 21.23 in the post-test with a mean difference of 9.63. The calculated paired t-value was 35.55, which was statistically significant at the 0.05 level.
Conclusion: The study concluded that demonstration was highly effective in improving knowledge regarding PICC dressing and management among third-year B.Sc. Nursing students.
