Abstract Hostel life plays a significant role in shaping students’ academic performance and overall personal development. This study, conducted by MBA students at AIET Mijar, examines how hostel living affects academic achievement among Engineering students, exploring both the benefits and challenges of communal residential living. We surveyed 200 ‘Engineering students residing in hostels at VTU University, focusing on facility conditions, safety services, family support, study environments, and peer relationships. Analysis combines descriptive statistics and chi-square tests with open-ended qualitative responses.

Findings show that while most students were satisfied with basic amenities—78% for room facilities, 85% for lighting, and 82% for internet—many had serious concerns about quiet study areas (62% insufficient) and noise disturbances (67%). Family contact (84% weekly or more) and peer study group participation were the strongest positive predictors of academic performance. Chi-square analysis confirmed a statistically significant association between regular family contact and academic improvement (χ²=3.910, p=0.048). Time management was acknowledged as a challenge by 71% of respondents. Based on these findings, this paper recommends targeted improvements in hostel infrastructure, family engagement programs, peer mentoring, and academic support services.
