The Fractured Prince and the Silenced Maiden: A Psychoanalytic and Trauma Theory Analysis of Shakespeare’s Hamlet

Author(s) Ms. Deepti Yadav, Prof. Dr. Neeta Kulshreshtha
Country India
Abstract Trauma has become one of the most important interdisciplinary methodologies in literary studies, providing new viewpoints on the psychological and emotional dimensions of canonical texts. Shakespeare’s Hamlet is frequently read through the lens of revenge, melancholy and existential doubt, but increasingly scholars have examined it as a story of deep psychological trauma. Modern trauma theory suggests that traumatic experiences of loss, betrayal and violence disrupt memory, identity and emotional regulation, often leading to fragmented behaviour and delayed action. Drawing on trauma theorists such as Cathy Caruth, Judith Herman, and Dominick LaCapra, as well as psychoanalytic and feminist criticism, scholars have begun to reread Hamlet’s indecision, Ophelia’s psychological breakdown, and Gertrude’s limited agency as representations of unresolved trauma, rather than as merely moral or philosophical dilemmas. This view not only improves our understanding of Shakespeare’s tragedy but also emphasises its ongoing relevance to contemporary debates about mental health, gendered violence, intergenerational trauma, and the psychological impact of extreme suffering.
