Factors Affecting Implementation and Automation of Inventory Management Systems

Abstract The automation of inventory management systems represents both a compelling operational opportunity and a persistent implementation challenge for Indian industrial enterprises, particularly SMEs operating within MIDC industrial clusters. Despite the demonstrated capabilities of barcode, RFID, IoT, ERP, and AI
technologies to substantially improve inventory accuracy, visibility, and cost efficiency, adoption remains constrained by a complex and interdependent configuration of technological, financial, organisational, human, and environmental factors that no existing framework adequately captures or addresses. This research addresses that gap through a comprehensive empirical investigation of the multi-dimensional factors affecting IMS automation adoption and through the development of the Cost-Benefit Adoption Framework as a structured decision-support tool grounded in established theoretical traditions. By
integrating Technology Acceptance Model, Diffusion of Innovations Theory, and Resource-Based View, the CBAF provides a theoretically coherent and practically applicable model for understanding and improving automation adoption readiness in resource-constrained industrial settings. The findings of this research will contribute to a more systematic understanding of why the implementation gap between technological capability and operational adoption persists in the Indian manufacturing context,
