Therapeutic Potential of Krishna Mrittika in Ayurvedic Clinical Practice: A Comprehensive Review

| Abstract | Background: Parthiva Chikitsa (Earth-based therapy) is a foundational therapeutic modality in Ayurveda, utilizing the fundamental properties of Prithvi Mahabhuta. Among various types of soils, Krishna Mrittika (Black Mud) holds significant clinical importance due to its high thermal capacity, toxin-absorbing properties, and Vata-Pitta pacifying nature. Aim: To systematically review the classical literature and pharmacological rationale of Krishna Mrittika, focusing on its therapeutic applications in chronic pain and inflammatory conditions. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive manual search of classical texts including Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Bhavaprakasha Nighantu was conducted. The gathered literature was synthesized to explain the Karmukata (pharmacodynamics) of Krishna Mrittika. Discussion: The Snigdha, Guru, and Sheeta properties of Krishna Mrittika make it an excellent medium for Lepa (pastes) and Upanaha (poultices). When utilized in super speciality clinical settings for orthopedic and neuro-muscular conditions (such as Sandhigata Vata and Vatarakta), it provides profound non-invasive analgesia and reduces Shotha (inflammation), effectively aiding in emergency pain relief without the need for systemic sedatives. Conclusion: Krishna Mrittika serves as a highly effective, economical, and localized therapeutic agent. Standardizing its purification and application methods is essential for broader integration into contemporary clinical practice. |
