Stability characteristics of triple-diffusive convection in an Oldroyd-B fluid layer

Abstract The study makes use of linear stability analysis to investigate the onset and stability of triple-diffusive convection in a layer of Oldroyd-B fluid. The principle of exchange of stabilities is verified, and a sufficient condition is derived which ensures that convection will start via stationary modes. Upper bounds are also determined for the growth rates in the case of both neutral and unstable disturbances, as well as for all combinations of rigid and free boundary conditions. Broadly speaking, the findings provide valuable insights into the way in which viscoelasticity and the presence of multiple diffusing components influence the stability of fluid layers that are commonly met in engineering and transport applications.
