Challenges Faced by Indian Students Inside the English Classroom

| Abstract | The English classroom in India is a dynamic yet challenging space where students engage in the process of language learning under varied socio-cultural and linguistic conditions. This research paper explores the major challenges faced by Indian students in acquiring English as a second language within the English classroom. These challenges are evident in both rural and urban educational contexts, though their intensity and nature differ significantly. For many learners from non-English-speaking backgrounds, English language learning becomes a demanding task that involves psychological, social, and academic barriers. At the same time, English teachers are expected to facilitate effective second language acquisition within limited classroom hours and under institutional constraints. In the Indian context, English functions not only as a medium of instruction but also as a symbol of social mobility, academic achievement, and professional success. This paper examines learner-related and classroom-related challenges and emphasises the need for supportive, learner- centred English classrooms that promote confidence, communication skills, and meaningful language use. |
